Lexington Herald-Leader interviews Shadow Mountain Stallions

H L photo.jpg (20897 bytes)Photo from Lexington Herald-Leader story on Arctic White from a feature article called "Rare Standing -- White Horse Makes Home in Bluegrass" appearing October 3, 2005 on the front page of the City/Region Section.  The newspaper quoted owner Jan Robbins as saying Arctic White is the "first and oldest of 15 white thoroughbreds bred from the sire Airdrie Apache," and went on to point out that Arctic White's sire was once owned by former Kentucky Gov. Brereton C. Jones' and wife Libby Jones' Airdrie Stud in Woodford County Kentucky.

White Colt Selected by Monty Roberts for Live Demo at Equine Affaire

Louisville, Ky. --  At the premier of the Equine Affaire in Kentucky on September 16, 2005, the top trainers were brought in to demonstrate their training techniques.  Headlining the presentations was Monty Roberts, the original "Horse Whisperer" and Monty Roberts 020a.jpg (677795 bytes)famous trainer for royalty.  On this Friday night he was to demonstrate how a horse can take its first rider under saddle using "Join-up"® He had 25 minutes.

Shadow Mountain Stallion's white thoroughbred colt, "Bellair",  was chosen from a group of about 8 horses that were brought to the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center for consideration.  Horses are selected for intelligence and ground manners.  Monty told the audience that he "was honored" to have an opportunity to work with such a rare and unusual thoroughbred.

Jan Robbins, Shadow Mountain Stallions owner/trainer, was asked to take the microphone and confirm for the audience that Monty or his staff had never trained the horse nor seen it before the event.  This two year-old colt had never had a saddle on, much less a rider.

After a few minutes of "Join-Up"  Monty placed a saddle on Bellair's back.  After a few minutes of bucking, Monty had the colt calmly trotting like the saddle wasn't even there.  Then it was time for the rider.  Slowly putting weight on the colt's back for the first time, the rider straddled the saddle then swung a leg over and sat.  The crowd was quiet as Monty let loose the bridle.

A moment passed.  Then a forward command and Bellair walked calmly around the round pen like he'd been doing it all his life.  The crowd cheered as the white thoroughbred, now officially "broke" under natural horsemanship techniques, was lead out of the arena by Mrs. Robbins.  It took exactly 25 minutes.

Fasig tipton sign.jpg (246509 bytes)Arctic White makes first personal appearance in Kentucky at Fasig-Tipton and stands with his family, the Bluegrass Farms Chaplaincy for a festival that celebrates our dedication to the spiritual well being of the  of the farm  workers of Central Kentucky. See Thoroughbred Times, July 30, 2005 page 10 for details.

It was a festival at the world famous Fasig-Tipton, Kentucky sales facility.  The pristine grounds were a perfect background for Arctic White's first personal appearance in Kentucky and for the farm workers to have a day to remember!.

Appearing on behalf of the non-profit Bluegrass Farms Chaplaincy (BGFC), Arctic White was a big hit as he performed forFasig Tipton visitor enjoys AW.jpg (209078 bytes) the crowd.  As usual, Arctic White was a perfect gentleman, interacting with "kids of all ages", often in the paddock with him.   Chaplain Rivera, our wonderful minister and friend,  stands ready to show Arctic to the farm workers who visited.

The BGFC ministers to those who work tirelessly, and usually without recognition, at the horse farms and race tracks in Central Kentucky.  This annual festival was an opportunity for the BGFC to say "thanks" to those who keep the horse industry going.   There was live music, a soccer tournament, plenty of great food, pony rides, games, and hundreds of happy people in attendance.  Click on the pictures below for a larger view.
